BMJ Open has published the results of a systematic review focused on public health interventions delivered by community pharmacies, which concludes that commissioners should consider using community pharmacies to help deliver public health services.

19 studies, which explored the effectiveness of community pharmacy-delivered interventions for weight management, smoking cessation and the misuse or excessive consumption of alcohol were included in the review.

The review concluded that community pharmacy is an appropriate and feasible setting to deliver a range of public health interventions and that given the potential reach, effectiveness and associated costs of these interventions, community pharmacy should be considered by commissioners to help deliver public health services.
