The Royal Pharmaceutical Society in Wales (RPS Wales) welcomes the recent announcement from the Welsh Government to roll out a new Choose Pharmacy service for common ailments in Wales. The announcement follows successful pathfinder evaluations in both Cwm Taf and Betsi Cadwaladr Local Health Board areas and campaigning from RPS Wales and its partners.

Commenting on the announcement to roll out of the Choose Pharmacy service, Mair Davies, Director of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society in Wales, said, ‘We very much welcome the announcement to roll out the Choose Pharmacy Scheme across Wales. This will offer patients the opportunity to have their common ailments treated by a pharmacist in a community pharmacy while reducing pressures on our GP colleagues, allowing them to treat more complex cases and make better use of NHS resources.

‘We have been calling for peoples GP records to be shared appropriately with community pharmacists for several years. This will improve quality of care and safety in the use of medicines.’
